Mikko Innanen


Mikko Innanen, a Finnish saxophonist and composer, began playing the alto saxophone at the age of ten. He graduated with a Master of Music degree from Jazz Music Department of the Sibelius Academy in 2003. In the past decade Innanen has established his position as one of the most innovative saxophonists and composers in Nordic improvised music. Nowadays he is also spending more time in New York City performing with many of the leading improvisers of the local scene. In November 2008 he received the Finnish Jazz Federation’s annual Yrjö Award as the jazz musician of the year. Mikko has performed with many international musicians such as Han Bennink, Andrew Cyrille, John Tchicai, and Ingrid Jensen, to name just a few. Innanen is the leader and co-leader of several groups and participated in numerous other ensembles as a featured soloist.
