Teppo Hauta-aho first began playing the double bass in Finland by ear without any formal musical education. When he was admitted to the Sibelius Academy he began studying bass with the legendary Oiva Nummelin. After receiving his diploma he continued his bass studies with Frantisek Posta in Prague. Besides being one of the busiest Finnish jazz bassists for many years he has been a member of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Finnish National Opera Orchestra. Throughout his career, Hauta-aho has continued to play improvised music alongside his career as a classical musician and composer. One of his most famous pieces, Kadenza, has been played at many music festivals worldwide, as well as in many bass competitions. He uses non-standard playing techniques in his pieces. More recently, besides Kellari Trio, he has been a member of the Olavi Trio, and Kalle Kalima & K18. For three years he was a member of the Cecil Taylor Quintet. He was awarded Finnish Jazz Legend status by the Finnish National Music Archive in 2019. |
