Reeds player Cory Wright assembled the bay area based Green Mitchell Trio with bassist Lisa Mezzacappa and drummer Jason Levis in order to realize a growing collection of music he has been writing for this instrumental configuration. The group is a kinetic, versatile unit that can climb through compositional complexities, swing from the outer limbs of jazz, and plummet into the groundlessness of spontaneous soundspace… and the possibility of hopping on a passing groove is never out of the question. Recent iterations of Green Mitchell have included John Schott on guitar and Sam Ospovat on drums.

…in a friendly, unassuming way: they slip in and out of jazzy grooves, over and through open improv spaces, get caught in bouncy riffs and wriggle loose in long, meandering streams.
Very nice bass from SF favorite Lisa Mezzacappa and fine drumming from Jason Levis contribute nicely to Wright’s reeds – the clarinet tracks are special treats.
These pieces are improvised in the finest jazz fashion–set the rules and then go. And boy, do these pieces go. Recorded in one day. Wow. That’s some session.
