The collaboration between Fabio Rambelli and Dirk Wachtelaer, two musicians with an extensive experience with various types of improvised music, began online as an attempt to explore the possibility of bringing together the two sonic spheres of the drums and of the ancient shō (Japanese mouth organ) within the framework of free improvisation.
Fabio Rambelli learned the shō in Japan. This ancient mouth organ has a history of more than two thousand years and is used in Gagaku, the ancient ceremonial music of Japan, and more recently in contemporary music. Fabio has released two CDs with Edgetone Records: Pearls (improvised music with his duo Neo Archē) and New Heritage (with his contemporary music trio).
Dirk Wachtelaer is a drummer and improviser who also works in sound art. Born and based in Belgium he continually crosses borders by working with artists from all cultures and disciplines. In his improvisations he creates a soundworld that is always surprising, using techniques of regular drumming, extended techniques as well as aleatoric processes.
