WISDOM OF THE IMPULSE, on the nature of free improvisation – by Tom
Nunn
Packed with interesting and on-hands information, Tom's recent book,
Wisdom
of the Impulse: On the Nature of Musical Free Improvisation, is one
of very few books on the subject of free improvisation, though there are
countless books on jazz improvisation.
Free improvisation, as a practice, is historically quite recent, having
begun around the mid to late 1950's, and only in the last two decades has
it become a widespread practice. Wisdom discusses its early history as
well as the practice today, and delves into theoretical issues involving
the influences and processes, offering a useful and consistent terminology
for understanding and communicating about free improvisation useful in
any genre or style of music. Edgetone is proud to make this book available
to the public via secure online servers.

EDGETONE RECORDS RELEASES
SCOTT LOONEY, SOLO PIANO ADVENTURES
In a sea of solo piano recordings this one stands alone. Eight musical adventures riveted with high energy and subtle softness keeps the listener engaged while weaving sound scapes and vivid musical colors. In addition to Looney's intriguing brand of originals, he also presents unique arrangements of some favorite standards such as "take the "a" train” and “stardust”.
Scott R. Looney has been making noises
on various instruments since he was about 3 years old, and comes from a
long list of Cal Arts alumni, joining fellow improvisers Adam Lane and
Aaron Bennett whom he regularly plays with. He first studied jazz
and improvisation in the unlikely cultural atmosphere of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, at Coe College under avant trumpeter Paul Smoker, also obtaining
his BM in Music Composition. In 1990 he attended the Banff Jazz Workshop
in Banff Canada, where he learned unique approaches to improvisation and
composition from Steve Coleman, Robin Eubanks and Kevin Eubanks.
In 1991 Scott attended the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied
improvisation under Roscoe Mitchell and Wadada Leo Smith, as well as composition
and interactive electronics under David Rosenboom and Morton Subotnick.
After graduating with an MFA in Music Composition, he moved to New York,
where he honed his composition and improvisation skills in sessions with
Herb Robertson, Phil Haynes, Jim Black, and Randy McKean.
In the summer of 1996, he moved back
to the Left Coast, this time to Oakland, and since then he has been gradually
emerging from his shell, composing and playing varying instruments in performances
with Leo Smith, Dan Plonsey, Moe, and Rent Romus.

EDGETONE RECORDS RELEASES CD TRILOGY
TRIBUTE TO H.P. LOVECRAFT
LOVECRAFT would be proud
Almost everyday in the news there are stories about how a group of scientists after so many decades of painstaking research and work create a new drug or make new discoveries, but how many times does one read about a group of musicians that have done the same thing?
A trio of experimental and improvisational musicians called the Tri-Cornered Tent Show has done just that. It has taken them the last part of the last century (25 years to be exact) of dedicated practice, research, and patience that brings them to announce the release of “Maze Above the Abyss”, “Improvisation on the Mythos of Eric Zann”, and “Beneath the Mountains of Madness” all encased in 3 compact discs.
The musical journey began with initial tracks being recorded using the ancient anti-deluvian technology of electronics from the 70’s. Though methodical deciphering of the Lovcraft short story “The music of Eric Zann”, and other related stories expanded upon Lovecraft’s Greater Cthulu Mythos they began recording free improvisation and orchestrated sound sculpture. Within those 25 years they created the projects now available on the new SF Bay Area label Edgetone Records.
Now, they come out from their exile held up in a well-insulated dank little studio in the depths of Richmond California. By the shear force of will and their dedication to the world of improvisation, they have a unique set of music to merit them worthy of attention. In a world of pop can music they could teach a class in patience and creation.

After years of independent touring and producing Rent Romus strengthens the ranks of musicians taking control over their destiny with the opening of Edgetone Records. Joining forces with Jazzheads Records, Romus will present some of the most creative musicians that the SF Bay Area, West Coast, and beyond has to offer. Each custom packaged CD release embodies the pure sound of the artist without compromise to a preconceived market.
In addition to the three new releases in April, Edgetone is in the planning stages for new music from bassist Bill Noertker, reed master Tony Passarell, electronic iconoclast Scott Looney, and drummer Phillip Everett. Also, jazz violinist Yehudit will debut her second CD on the Edgetone Modern Jazz Series.
