Listen on:
The latest album from the duo Fire & Flux which began twenty five years ago between drummer Richard Gilman-Opalsky and saxophonist Ben Kates.
“I love Ben Kates as a musician and a human being. I love saxophone and drums duos. This one formed around twenty-five years ago. Even as a drummer, I like the saxophone better than all other instruments. There are two reasons why: The first is the place of the saxophone in the history of jazz, creative music, free jazz, and free improvisation. The most powerful statements, the most moving cries of sadness and anger, of hope and defiance have, to my ears, come clearest through saxophones. The second reason is closer to the title of this album. Unlike drums, guitar, bass, piano, etc., the saxophone converts breath into sound, transforming the invisible activity of human life force into music. I am not a religious man, but music is the closest I have ever come to that. I am not sure about immaterial spirits of a celestial or metaphysical kind. But I do believe in material spirits.” — Richard Gilman-Opalsky
